The Perfect Getaway in Portal, Arizona

Situated at an elevation of 4,500′ in the shadow of the Chiricahua Mountains, Four Bar Cottages is located approximately 5 miles from the small town of Portal, Arizona and 7 miles from the mouth of world-famous Cave Creek Canyon. Open year-round, Four Bar Cottages is the perfect getaway for birders, astronomers, hikers, historians, biologists or family vacations, and we’re centrally located for sight-seeing excursions or mountain biking trips. The Portal area is appreciated by star-gazers for the clear night skies, and Four Bar Cottages’ low light pollution makes it an ideal place for astronomers.

Four Bar Cottages consists of 80 secluded acres of private property, with the area around the cottages and main house situated under a large grove of cottonwood, mulberry, pine, maple and other trees, as well as various kinds of bushes and shrubbery, offering one of the largest groves in the valley. This combination of vegetation is responsible for the large number of birds that are drawn to the property, to the delight of birders. Other wildlife frequently observed on the grounds are javelina, coyotes, jackrabbits, bobcats, mule deer, box turtles, gray fox, and even black bear.

Our "high season" at the Four Bar Cottages is March 1st – May 31st. Please note that during this period, there is a two-night minimum stay.

To ensure that your stay is a peaceful “get away from it all,” the cottages do not have telephones. Cell phone coverage is provided by Verizon and AT&T. A telephone is available in the office for emergency calls.
